Here's what we call the TIMELINE of BEHAVIOR which diagrams the basic events involved in all behavior change.

As you can see, time moves from left to right.

Whenever we look at teaching or behavior change in general it's helpful to remember this diagram. Antecedents always preceed Behavior which is followed by Consequences, and the history of these relationships determines when a specific behavior occurs and how often. By history we mean the times in the past where a particular behavior occurred in the presence of certain people, things, or places (antecedents) and when the behavior was followed by other events (consequences). It is these events in time that form the history of a particular behavior and the rules under which it comes to occur.
